The Independent should not tempt people to enter addictive gambling activities. It destroys lives. For every winner there are thousands who have lost big sums, become bankrupt or homeless, have seen their families suffer. That's not why I read the paper, and it puts me off continuing to read it. You are quick to condemn all sorts of injustice in the world, now you add some of your own. Shame on you!

I agree 100% with Nina. Gambling destroys lives and I object to being manipulated by an article purporting to be objective journalism but whose true purpose is to advertise this newspaper's involvement in such murky, get-rich-quick business. Shame on you!
This Article is brought to you by VirginPoker!

Is this a newspaper article or advertisement?
Well who cares as long as millions of credit card pounds/euros end up in the pockets of offshore tax-dodgers and some find their way back to the media industry.
Ever since Online Gambling was banned in the US of A, the industry bombs Europe with expensive advertisements in TV, magazines, newspapers, just to get the money of those susceptible to gambling. If they actually have the money or not is the credit card companies' problem, where debts mount to new heights every month...

Thanks you Independent for driving a few more victims into debt.

When you research articles such as the one above, do you ask all the right questions?. Why not ask the poker sites to supply you with data on what percentage of their customers are winners in the game? When Roy Brindley and others win their money, where does it come from? Poker is a game of skill, but a shockingly small amount of players have that skill, and only a tiny number are winners. Sure Phil Ivey may be worth as much as $70m from the game, but what about the losers. Too many people see the winners, whilst the overwhelming majority of people who are losers slink off into the shadows. Poker is a tough game with a huge element of luck. Undeniably winning in the long term is a skill, but bear in mind the awful casualty rate. This enterprise is not something that should be encouraged by those who perhaps do not realise the full nature of what they are advertising.

Whilst, clearly i agree with some of the other posters that this article is quite clearly advertorial masquerading as editorial, the slamming of online gaming is somewhat over the top. Yes, there are problem gamblers online, but arguably online is a far far safer enviroment, where actions can be monitored, than say an offline casino, or bookies. Nearly all the reputable sites have links to gamcare and various other gambling charities, and proceedures in place for "responsible gaming practices" in their backend systems.

Most gamblers online, as indeed is the case in the real world, treat gambling as a leisure pursuit, and those that take it too far are in the tiny minority. The industry is actually pretty regulated and whilst the arguments about offshore earning have some validity, online gambling is providing a very welcome boost to uk media owners (who do pay tax in this country) at a time when other corporations are slashing their advertising budgets.
Chill out...

Ok, how about all the millions of people, like me, who play poker online without getting addicted? And who play for amounts they can afford to lose? Yes, this article's an advertorial, and a pretty shameless one at that, but there are more important things to worry about.

Every newspaper carries horse racing cards specifically for betting tips. Where's the outcry there?

I'd like to know how many of the above commenters actually play poker, because if you do they do they'll know it's a game of skill - if you simply gamble you'll lose.

Nina, "For every winner there are thousands who have lost big sums, become bankrupt or homeless, have seen their families suffer." Please... this isn't the Daily Mail here. That's the most ludicrous over-the-top statement I'll read this week.

A respected newspaper offering a free to enter poker tournament.

Shock / Horror...must post a comment to complain...how sad!

If you are so week and vulnerable that you feel to play in this league will drag you into the depths of depravity and leave you a shambling homeless wreck with masses of debt then I truly feel sorry for you.

I am hoping you lot are a general representation of the Independent readership as then the league can be left to us degenerate punters who lounge round all day playing poker.

...and, long term, it's a game of skill, but you probably wouldn't understand the reasoning behind this, so let's just leave that for another time.

Thanks for the league Independent.

Actually, 1/3 of poker players online make a profit....

But dont let facts like that get in the way of ignorant sanctimony.
For every winner there are thousands of losers...

Well there you are! For some lucky people poker is a game of serious money but for other its a game where the risk of rewards for investment might as well be the same as winning the lotterey. For me I would rather have the banter, write b*llocks and play for pocket money.

I completely agree. As an online professional I cannot imagine working in any other industry. To get the salary i earn now, i'd need to be the MD or CEO of a large multinational firm. Online poker has enabled me to travel the world and given me a lifestyle whereby I have time to do anything, not being constrained by the 9-5 Monday-Friday routine that most people are enslaved in for much of their existence.

JUST CANT BELIEVE SOME OF THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS BY SOME!!!!!!!
i am a regular player on virgin poker and play to my limits and within a budget. It is all about control and bankroll management. The difference with poker "GAMBLING" is that it is a skill which ignorant and/or stupid people dont comprehend. You decide what action to take and ultimately with the use of skill/percentage odds/player knowledge/table position etc etc decide you own destiny.Quite a bit different from the lottery and horse racing or even casino games. The people who lose usually are not as skillful in the game.
Anyway thanks to Virgin and the Independent for this great free monthly tourny.
Just like to say that while certain people are moaning about the morals of poker I will be in Vegas thanks to this free game as I won the first months league!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you both for putting on this series of games.
It has been great to play in.
Just hoping the lack of a tournament in October does not mean the end all together.
