Through the 1990s I was scared to go to Ibiza. I thought it would be loutish, like Essex on a Saturday night. Then when I went there three years ago – woah. I fell in love with this amazing, spiritual, free place. I've been back about 10 times and now I'm making a documentary film about it. It draws people in. You go there to clear yourself or unlock something deep within. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, it attracted people escaping fascism and capitalism. Somewhere to go to be free.
Magical things happen on that island. You can go from chichi champagne at Pascha, to the bongo beat of a hippie full moon party in the mountains, or a yoga retreat on a cliff-top plateau overlooking the sea. My favourite club? EC10. It's a lunatic asylum. It's only open Monday afternoons and a lot of people dress like clowns. Amazing.
Partition, starring Jimi Mistry, is in cinemas now. The DVD is out on 24 November.
