Buy Me Bill Amberg Laptop bag pounds 92
Transporting one's laptop in style is a problem facing every fashionable executive in the land. Last time I took it on a train, I noticed halfway to Bath that I had shoved it in a broken nappy changing bag which was functional but, I fear, deeply unimpressive to my interviewee.
Luckily, the thinking woman's handbag designer, Bill Amberg, has come up with a chic, practical solution called an A4 Portfolio Bag. The name might be a bit boring (compare the Bubble, Squash and Jubilee bags, available in something exciting called "Nappa Plongee") but fear not. Made from sturdy, waterproof nylon and available in black and navy, it is one of those rare and wonderful bags that is smart and functional enough for the office yet sufficiently hip to take out afterwards to a restaurant/party/bar.
Inside there's just room for your laptop plus two document pockets for newspaper, personal organiser, et al. Outside there are three chunkier, securely Velcroed pockets for purse, lipstick, chocolate and anything else you might need for an evening out. The strap even converts into a rucksack for the bike ride home.
My only complaint is there's no space for the bulky adaptor I need to carry with my laptop, since it only runs for an hour off the battery. The other problem is the price (pounds 92), which seems a bit steep for nylon. Then again, my laptop cost pounds 1,500 three years ago and has just blown up, which is hardly value for money.
I think I may go mad and buy the bag, and a better laptop, too n
The A4 Portfolio Bag is available from the Bill Amberg Shop, 10 Chepstow Road, London W2, and Space NK, 41 Earlham Street, London WC2.
