Passengers on the Washington subway jumped on to the tracks to save a man in a motorised wheelchair who had fallen from the platform.

CCTV footage showed the man roll across the U-Street Station platform before falling off the edge and lying motionless in the tracks early Tuesday afternoon.

Fellow passengers moved towards the edge of the platform and two men jumped down and hoisted the 54-year-old back onto the platform in less than a minute.

Metro officials said the man had some cuts to his face but was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
