Hollywood stars Meryl Streep and George Clooney lead the fourth edition of the Rome Film Festival, where Streep will receive a career Marcus Aurelius award and Clooney will star in Up in the Air, directed by Jason Reitman, who won the festival in 2007 for Juno. Czech director Milos Forman heads this year's jury.

Premio Planeta: Spanish literary award

Created in 1952 in Barcelona, Spain, to recognize underappreciated Spanish-language novels, the Premio Planeta Prize novel is the second-largest book prize in the world, after the Nobel Prize for Literature, with a purse of €600,000 awarded to the winner. The 2008 Premio Planet went to Fernando Savater, Spanish acclaimed author and philisopher, for his novel La Hermandad de la Buena Suerte.

Alexander Calder: A Balancing Act

Prince Philip Designers Prize announced in London

Nine designers are in the running for the prestigious design prize, set up by the husband of Queen Elizabeth II in 1959. Nominees for this year's 50th anniversary of the prize include David Adjaye, who designed the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, fashion designer Hussein Chalayan, who has exhibited at London's Tate Modern museum as well as at the Venice Art Biennale, and Red or Dead design label founder Wayne Hemingway, among others.

Beatles to Bowie: the 60s exposed
