St Maarten's Regatta celebrates 30 years
The Caribbean island of St. Maarten celebrates the 30th anniversary of its annual sailing regatta which takes place between March 4 and 7.
Over 300 boats from six classes are expected to join the St Maarten Yacht Club at its base in the Netherlands Antilles to race around the island over the course of the four-day festival.
Prior to that there will be a Budget Marine Match Racing invitational on March 2 for the Regatta's hot shots, and the spinnaker class Commodore Cup is planned for the first two days of the Regatta schedule.
The Regatta itself is divided into four classes, accommodating boats from the monohull, bare boat, and multihull specifications, with some allowances made for an open class group.
As is the custom with similar sailing events, there are entertainments planned for the evening, featuring musicians who are locals and regulars on the island as well as international stars such as Mike Reno ("Almost Paradise" from the 1984 film Footloose), Bobby Kimball of Toto fame ("Africa," "Rosanna"), and Maxi Priest ("That Girl").
Immediately following the Heineken Regatta in St Maarten is the Bacardi Cup in Miami, part of the Miami Sailing Week (March 8-13), which goes to show how keen beverage companies are to cement their relationships with those in the sailing world.
