The Syndicate is the latest British drama to get an American remake by ABC

A BBC drama about supermarket workers who win the lottery is to be remade for American audiences.

The Syndicate, which starred Gavin & Stacey's Joanna Page and Harry Potter actor Matthew Lewis, is to become Lucky 7 when it is remade for ABC.

The US version is written by David Zabel and Jason Richman and will transport the tale to a Queens service station where seven employee's lives are changed by winning a lottery jackpot.

The American series will follow the format of the five episodes of The Syndicate, each of which followed an individual's experience of the same events, shedding further light on every situation.

Other British dramas to get the American treatment include Ricky Gervais' hugely successful transplantation of The Office, The Inbetweeners (which was axed after one series), Only Fools and Horses (which wasn't recommissioned after two pilots) and Elementary, an American take on the BBC’s Sherlock series, is also doing well.

Plans are underway for an American take on Gavin & Stacey (New Jersey and South Carolina could work as alternatives to Essex and Wales). And following the Stateside success of Downton Abbey its creator Julian Fellowes is writing a drama set in 1880s New York called The Gilded Age.
