2000 Chablis Jean Marc Brocard, £8.49, Oddbins

This versatile dry white relies more for its classic character on fresh fruit flavour, good weight and elegant ripeness than the steeliness associated with the chardonnay grape in northern burgundy. It can be drunk as an apéritif, or with fresh shellfish.

1999 MontGras Syrah, Colchagua Valley, £6.99, Sainsbury's

Ripe and generously fruity on the palate, the approachably soft tannins and sweet oak spiciness of this blackcurranty red from Chile's warm Colchagua Valley add a savoury note to the syrah grape's chocolatey ripeness, making it a useful matchmaker for grilled or roasted dark meats.
