White: 2000 Domaine Galetis Chardonnay/ Viognier, Vin de Pays d'Oc, Marks & Spencer, £3.99,

From an estate near Carcassonne in the south of France, this unoaked dry white retains the light spiciness and fresh- fruit character of the blend. Chilled well down, it makes a versatile summer white for drinking on its own or with a salade niçoise.

Red: 2000 Sainsbury's Moroccan Syrah, Beni M'Tir, £3.99

A bit of a surprise, this delightful Sainsbury's own-label red from Morocco. Gone is any authentic whiff of camel dung, replaced instead by a modern, resoundingly vivid, raspberry-fruity style that is totally fresh, spicy and eminently gluggable. Enjoy.
