There were 158,200 divorces in England and Wales last year.

Marriages of those who divorced lasted an average of 9.8 years. Wives sued for divorce more often than husbands. Seventy-one per cent of divorces were granted to them and the most frequent grounds were the husband's behaviour (53 per cent) and adultery (22 per cent). Of divorces granted to husbands, adultery accounted for 37 per cent and separation of two years with consent accounted for 28 per cent.
