Feast from the east

NOT ALL Japanese sports cars are recent grey imports. Some are overlooked and underrated - like the Subaru SVX. These days Subaru is a charismatic name thanks to its world championship rallying success with the Impreza. Back in 1991, though, it was best known for off-roaders that farmers liked. That is why no one took the four-wheel drive, 230 bhp, 150mph supercar seriously. The styling was very much retro futuristic Gerry Anderson, and a price tag of over pounds 30,000 did not help, and Subaru only sold a handful. T Worldwide Vehicle Supplies has a 1993 example in black, with black leather interior, air conditioning and every extra you could need for a mere pounds 12,257.
