CAR OF THE WEEK

VOLVOS LOST their green wellie/Labrador/suburban school-run image with the arrival of the T5 in 1993. Not only had 850 series Volvos lost their trademark sharp edges, they now had a top speed approaching 150mph. Most buyers, including the police, ordered them as traditional estate cars, but the rarely seen saloons were just as exciting and quick. Under-rated and ignored, they are worth some pounds 2,000 less than the estate. Long-time Volvo specialist Phil Whitaker Cars (01753 647777) has a P-reg example for just pounds 15,000.
