Mosaic kit, pounds 60
If you have friends or relatives who have already tried decoupage, paper making and raffia work, here's another hobby they could turn their busy hands to. The mosaic team who created the swirly green and gold "Crustacea bar" at Quaglino's restaurant in London have come up with this DIY kit. Based on a medieval design from the Church of San Clemente in Rome, it includes all the equipment you'll need: glass, goggles, cutting equipment, glue, frame etc. From the Mosaic Workshop, Unit B, 443-449 Holloway Road, London N7 6LJ (0171-263 2997).
VTech child's answerphone, pounds 24.99
Yup, an answering machine for three to six-year-olds. And it works, sort of. There are 70 pre-programmed messages from different characters, and the child can either dial them up or wait for the phone to ring. They will then hear some useful message (in a strong transatlantic accent) such as: "I'm the farmer. I have six sheep. Ba-a-a-a-" or "Phone the dentist". Mad but rather fun, and conceivably educational. From Hamley's, Toys R Us, Argos, John Lewis and other good shops. Or phone 01235 555545 for stockists.Reuse content
