Before the week is out... Do this

IF YOU fancy yourself as a bit of a mental athlete here's your chance to test your wits against the experts. The 1999 Mind Sports Olympiad, now in its third year, takes place at Olympia, London, next week and is open to anyone wanting to compete in any of 40 brain-teasers, ranging from chess to poker to the World Memory Championships. Serious thinkers will no doubt opt for the challenging Pentamenthalon and Decamenthalon events - enough to give ordinary mortals a headache. If the old grey matter isn't quite fit enough, you can always watch from a comfy chair.

Mind Sports Olympiad, 21-29 August, Olympia, entry pounds 13, pounds 5 children, spectators pounds 5 (tel: 01707 659080).
