Chinese shopping online at Alibaba Corp sites
Thursday 09 June 2011
A new report by comScore into how Chinese internet users spend their time online indicates that with regards to retail sites, those owned by the Alibaba corporation - including marketplace Taobao - are the most popular.
The study, released June 8 and conducted by digital analysis firm comScore examined how internet users in Greater China (mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong) aged over 15 spent their time on the internet - the study did not include sites accessed from internet cafés, mobile phones or PDAs.
The most popular category of internet sites in Greater China was 'portal sites'. Portal sites include search engines and email services and accounted for 24.4 percent of time spent online.
Retail sites accounted for five percent of all time spent online by internet users in Mainland China; of all the retail sites those under the umbrella of Alibaba.com Corporation were the most popular.
Alibaba.com , ?????? in Chinese, is exclusively a business-to-business trade platform, however the Alibaba group also owns the widely successful consumer-oriented online marketplace Taobao.
Taobao, ??? in Chinese, works in a similar manner to eBay.com: sellers can offer items either for auction or at a fixed price. Both individual sellers and business can offer goods through the site. Recently Levi's became the latest foreign brand to strengthen its online retail presence in China through the launch of a store on Taobao at the beginning of March.
For non-Chinese-peaking consumers, a number of intermediate companies offer bilingual services for shopping Tabobao including Shoppingontaobao, Taobao agent and Taobao English.
Online retailer Amazon also has a strong presence in China where it operates under both Amazon.cn and Joyo.
