Christie's sale of original book illustrations

An impressive selection of original book illustrations go under the hammer at Christie's on Friday at 11am. Highlights include a range of work by celebrated artist Ernest Howard Shepard, from Winnie the Pooh drawings to work he drew for Kenneth Grahame's Wind in the Willows - one charming study of Mole is estimated at pounds 4,000-pounds 6,000. Another unusual Shepard drawing, commissioned by Punch to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 (pounds 10,000-pounds 15,000), combines the characters from Winnie the Pooh with those from The Wind in the Willows. Among the works by Louis Wain, famous for depicting his felines in human costumes and everyday situations, is an image of cats playing cricket (pounds 600-900, above).
