Dog show streams live with six new breeds
Monday 14 February 2011
The 135th annual edition of Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, the second longest-running sports event in the US, will judge 2,500 purebred dogs culminating in the Best in Show championship for various breeds, February 14-15.
The sold-out show is held at New York City's Madison Square Garden and telecasts live at night on USA Network and CNBC in the US, with highlights streamed on the website: http://www.westminsterkennelclub.org
On February 14, the Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding Groups will be presented at
8-9 PM and 9-11 PM EST. On February 15, the Sporting, Working and Terrier Groups are presented and the Best in Show is chosen.
The overwhelming winners, placing 52 times, are dachshunds but, among the most popular dog breeds in the US, per the American Kennel Club, eight breeds have never won the title. America's favorite dog for the past 12 years, Labrador Retrievers, have only placed 10 times. Other favorite dogs Golden Retreivers, Chihuahua and Great Danes have also not performed well.
Six breeds will make their Westminster debuts in 2011, newly recognized by the American Kennel Club and eligible for competition: the Boykin Spaniel (Sporting Group), the Bluetick and Redbone Coonhounds (Hound), the Italian Cane Corso and Leonberger (Working), and Icelandic Sheepdog (Herding).
The most important of three American dog shows, including the popular National Dog Show on the Thanksgiving holiday, this event is the equivalent to Crufts in Birmingham, England, the largest and most prestigious in the world with 22,973 dogs shown over four days, this year scheduled for March 10-13.
