Bolt from the blue: Why blue is still the colour

Forget notions of the colour blue being boring, this season the shade is electric, says Emma Akbareian

In The Devil Wears Prada, Meryl Streep’s character, fashion editor Miranda Priestly, chides her assistant for believing two similar belts are the same.

Using the “blue” jumper that her assistant is wearing as an example, the waspish editor snaps: “What you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise. It’s not lapis. It’s actually cerulean.”

Seven years on from the film, shades of blue are once again a talking point.

For autumn/winter, the relevant shade is cobalt – a colour that hovers somewhere between royal blue and navy. Where navy can come across as quite serious, cobalt is a much more lively hue.

Worn head-to-toe as seen at Michael Kors, it’s a bold look, but added incrementally to an outfit it provides a flash of colour which will really pop.
