Dresses to impress this summer

Whether you're looking for vibrant prints or minimalist white, there's a frock to suit all styles this summer, says Emma Akbareian

Brights

In a sea of neutrals and monochromes you can stand out by opting for a dress in a colour-pop shade. There was a rainbow-like display of colour on the catwalk for the season, from tomato reds to neon oranges and electric blues. Take inspiration from designers including Gucci and Michael Kors and invest in accessories of the same shade for a daring head-to-toe look.

Midi

Hem lengths have been dominated by two particular trends recently; thigh-skimming minis and floor-sweeping maxis. For spring/summer there's a more grown-up version on the scene, the midi. Falling around about mid-calf, it's an ideal option for those looking for something a little more restrained from their summer dress. Form-fitting designs work best for more formal occasions, while pleated-skirt versions are great for the day.

Floral

It is perhaps an obvious choice for spring/summer, but obvious doesn't necessarily mean boring. Where once florals were confined to more old-fashioned prints, now the sky's the limit in the manner in which they appear; from digital designs to soft watercolours. The plunging neckline on this Glamorous dress also demonstrates that they don't have to be girly but can be offer serious sex appeal, too.

Lace

It's hard to find a prettier fabric than lace; whether fashioned into light and airy frocks or sensual see-through slips. Dresses that feature a brightly coloured underlay with a neutral lace layer over the top are a modern way to wear it. Miss Selfridge is a great destination for those wanting to channel lace in a vintage style with its “Designed By” collection, which features a range of delicate lacy designs.

White

Rarely worn outside these midsummer months, white is the ultimate high-season colour; practical in the heat, easy to pair with almost any other shade and flattering. It was a reocurring presence at shows this season in various forms, from whimsical ruffle designs at Chloé to a sports-luxe vibe at Victoria Beckham. As with most light colours, this is a shade best worn with the hint of a holiday (or faked) tan.
