Is it just me or do most Father's Day gift ideas cater to chaps whose grandchildren are grown? I mean, who really needs a new badger-hair shaving brush in this day and age?

Certainly not the ever-growing breed of cool young dads – not least because they've mostly got beards and wouldn't know what to do with such a device. But they deserve a bit of appreciation, too; in fact, a young child is all the more reason for a bit of extra TLC, as the shock of sleepless nights and endless surprises can be rather ageing.

Skin & Stubble Moisturiser

£12.99, L'Oréal, boots.com

This is a product for the person who kisses him too, as softened stubble means less irritation for both parties.

Face wash

£4.49, Bull Dog, meetthebulldog.com

Green tea, cedarwood and patchouli essential oils mean this formula will unclog pores while leaving a pleasantly manly whiff.

Under-eye concealer

£32, Tom Ford for Men, 0870 034 2566

Sleek and discreet packaging and a creamy, blendable formulation – perhaps a bit of guidance is needed so he avoids panda eyes.

Thickening cream

£12.95, labelm.com

A bottle of hair growth shampoo may be deemed insensitive, but if he's worried about thinning on top, this volume plumper may help.

Absinthe purifying hand cream

£10, thebodyshop.com

Parenthood can be dirty work, leaving hands horny and parched, but this light formula is easily absorbed with a fresh fragrance that isn't cloying.
