OK, so I've thought about this a lot and I might just about be ready to start thinking about the new season. Maybe.

Ah you're over the sales at last. Congratulations. Now the dilemma of where to begin on all the new stuff.

Exactly. One new piece seems to demand four others.

I hear you. So start with a medium-sized investment, which is to say more than a top, but less than a coat (like fashion Play Your Cards Right). For example, a bomber jacket. It's a key item for spring, but there were lots around last season, so it will slip it into your wardrobe without making everything else look old.

Was trying to sidestep the 1990s revival, actually; not so much that I remember it first time round as that first time round feels like five minutes ago.

Spring bombers are more cool daywear or cocktail hour than free party in a field, so fear not. I love this peachy quilted number from Hobbs (£129, hobbs.co.uk, pictured above). Or if you fancy combining the bomber with another big trend – florals – then Gap's printed bomber is a two-in-one update (£59.95, gap.co.uk).
