Ahead of the annual Met Gala (the event formally known as the Costume Institute Gala) which takes place on Monday, we take a delve into the event's history and its most iconic dresses.

For those not in the know, the fundraising gala is held every year to mark the grand opening of the Costume Institute's fashion exhibition held at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The theme of the exhibition provides the dresscode for the event's attendees and has a long history of attracting some of the most interesting and often unusual red carpet creations.

Previous year's themes have included: Anglomania, Poiret, Superheroes, The House of Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, American Women, Jackie Kennedy, Punk and last year's Charles James theme.

The 2015 exhibition is China: Through The Looking Glass.

It was reported that tickets come with a $25,000 price tag. And details of this year's lucky guestlist were released last week with Jennifer Lawrence acting as chair and a slew of A-list stars from the world of fashion, music and film all slated to attend.

Check back next week for a full roundup of who wore what at the 2015 Met Gala.
