Summer jewellery: The bling thing

Be decorative rather than decorous – jewellery for summer 2012 has taken a turn for the colourful, oversized and unapologetically flash. Emma Akbareian is suitably dazzed

There’s no better way to brighten up your wardrobe than with lashings of decorative jewels. The premium jewellery brand Swarovski has fully embraced the spirit of summer with its new Tropical Paradise collection. The result is an array of statement crystal pieces in a vibrant colour palette of fuchsia, green and turquoise blues.

The Tangara bib necklace is the signature piece of the collection; entirely handmade it’s fashioned from geometric crystals in a tropical palette inspired by the bird of paradise. The range takes a more literal turn with the Toco Flamingo pieces which include a pair of drop earrings and a pendant necklace both featuring the playful design of pink embellished flamingos.

Dannijo is a label that features a more eclectic take on statement jewels. Founded by sisters Danielle and Jodie Snyder in 2008, it has become the go-to brand for opulent accessories with a vintage feel. Its newest collection, Peaceful Warriors and Trippy Hippies, has a distinct holiday feel to it: cuff bracelets, choker necklaces and teardrop earrings in dazzling shades of turquoise and yellow. Statement pieces such as these need no longer be reserved purely for formal occasions, it’s perfectly acceptable to bring out your bling in the daylight hours.

When it comes to accessorising, necklaces can be layered for effect, bracelets stacked and rings worn on multiple fingers. Colour should not present an obstacle either, whether it’s traditional precious stone shades or a more trend-led option such as candy-coloured jewels and bright neon shades.
