The new way to go nude for spring/summer

From cream to caramel to cocoa, neutral shades are a luxurious foil to the bright colours of summer, says Emma Akbareian

It's not every day that you hear style advice that advocates going nude, but for spring/summer it might be surprising to hear that it is one of the more wearable of new season trends.

No need to break out your birthday suit however, because this look is about barely there shades, not barely there clothes.

Trends can be a scary concept especially in a season that has put neon colours on the agenda. It is always good news then, when a current season trend will also pass as a highly versatile investment purchase. Nude shades will seamlessly mix and match with your existing wardrobe to the extent that it's harder to think of shades that don't go with nude than those that do.

Nude colours encompass a spectrum of neutral shades from milky beiges to creamy mocha and toffee. As is the case with almost all lighter colours, they are instantly more flattering with a hint of a tan but as a general rule don't pick clothing in the same shade or any lighter than your own skin-tone to avoid looking washed out or worse, naked.

Wear the shade head-to-toe and mix and match fabrics such as silk, leather and lace for a play on textures that will make the most of the broad range of complimenting tones. Nicole Farhi used neutrals for spring/summer 2013 combining floaty layers with racer necklines for a sportier take on the look.

Those who have a penchant for all things black may even be tempted to stray from the norm with neutral accessories that will seamlessly blend with any wardrobe. Neutral colours can also be a useful tool for neutralising the bold effect of bright shades making even neon a wearable option.
