If you’ve been umming and ahhing about whether or not to go for a shorter hairstyle lately then this charity campaign might just convince you to take the plunge.

Partnering with the Little Princess Trust, hair styling brand GHD is launching a nationwide initiative throughout September and October to encourage people to “chop to their chin” and donate their luscious locks to children across the UK and Ireland.

A charity that started in 2006 in memory of five-year-old Hannah Tarplee, who sadly lost her battle with cancer the previous year, the Little Princess Trust supplies free-of-charge, real-hair wigs to children who have lost their hair as a result of cancer treatments and other illnesses.

But with each wig requiring 10 donations-worth of hair to complete (four inches is lost due to the specialist knotting process), GHD is enlisting the help of an army of stylists and devoted fans to raise awareness.

“Everyone associated with the Little Princess Trust feels honoured to benefit from this wonderful partnership with GHD,” said Monica Glass, charity manager at the Little Princess Trust.

“To have the opportunity to receive more hair donations through their #Choptoyourchin campaign is fantastic support! Thank you!”

So, how do you donate your hair? On 21 September participating salons will be offering complimentary cuts to “chop to your chin” and donate, but you can of course go for the chop whenever the mood suits.

That being said, there are a few guidelines to follow to ensure the Little Princess Trust gets the best out of your donated hair.

The minimum length requirement is seven inches as this can make a shorter wig but the longer the donation, the longer the wig.

Your hair must also be clean, dry, in good condition and can be from any gender. Most hair types are accepted, including straight, wavy, curly or chemically straightened, as are any tresses that have been dyed, bleached or highlighted.

Unfortunately, the wig maker is currently unable to accept afro hair – the Trust buys these separately – dreadlocks, extensions or hair that is mostly grey.

To donate yours, simply wash and dry your hair without conditioner or styling products. Put it in a plait, secure at both ends and ask your hairdresser to cut above the band nearest your head.

Then simply pop into a clear, resealable plastic bag and a padded envelope and send to –

Whether you decide to go for the chop or not, there are other ways you can help out. GHD recently launched its limited edition Pink Blush collection in collaboration with Breast Cancer Now in the UK.

If you buy the Pink Blush Styler or Air Hairdryer, £10 will be donated to Breast Cancer Now or you can also pick up the Paddle Brush which contributes £2 from every sale.
