Lady Gaga's meat dress 'No. 1' fashion statement of 2010

Time magazine has printed 50 wide-ranging lists summing up the best of 2010, from "Top Ten Fiction Books" to "Top Ten Feuds." In its "Top Ten Fashion Statements of 2010," pop singer Lady Gaga was ranked No. 1 for wearing a dress made of meat- with shoes, hat, and purse to match- to the MTV Video Music Awards.

Singer M.I.A. was ranked second for showing up at an awards event this year in a burqa, which Time magazine calls "one of the most controversial garments of our era." The burqa is viewed as a symbol of oppression for some, while for others, it's a symbol of liberation, freeing the women who wear it from oversexualization. Given that M.I.A. isn't Muslim herself, it was quite a shocking fashion statement to make.

Tennis player Venus Williams was ranked third for wearing an ensemble to the U.S. Open that some deemed too sexy: a corset-style red-trimmed dress, which Venus designed herself for her EleVen clothing collection, and undies. Williams defended her choice of clothing saying: "The outfit is about illusion. And it's obviously lace and kind of having that illusion of wearing lace and not having anything under it."
