As festive fever turns to holiday fever and the television commercials start featuring sun, sand and exotic locations, it is time to think holiday practicalities.

Forget those hi-tech, toe-crushing suitcases on wheels - the truly sophisticated way to travel is brought to us by Eastpak. It has created a bag that can adopt three different looks. No, it doesn't change colour in the rain, or react to body heat; it is actually three bags in one.

At first glance, it looks like a traditional rucksack, more commonly seen on the international backpacker. As its name suggests, this super-strong nylon bag is hardwearing, waterproof and four times as resistant to tears as common varieties of nylon.

The rucksack turns, ingeniously, into a suitcase. Hidden away in the five zippered compartments are the straps that allow this transformation. Those clever people at Eastpak have also added a detachable mini-pack to the main body of the bag.

The Outer Limits Travel Pak costs £178, which includes a lifetime guarantee.

Eastpak has also introduced a range of college bags made from NatureTex, a synthetic fabric that is made from plastic bottles and is fully biodegradable.

The Eastpak range is available from Harrods, Knightsbridge, London SW1; Slam City Skates, 16 Neal's Yard, Covent Garden, London WC2; American Retro, 35 Old Compton Street, London W1; Branches of Fenwicks nationwide; MBC, 71 Elderslie Street, Glasgow; Porters, 6-8 Royal Exchange Arcade, Manchester; Richmond Classics, 9-11 Richmond Hill, Bournemouth.
