Jeans update: Vivienne Westwood, Opening Ceremony, Henry Holland

Denim is getting a whole lot edgier this year with designers including Henry Holland and Vivienne Westwood updating the classic jean.

Veteran jeans brand Levi's is upping the game with two different ranges this spring: its collaboration with concept store Opening Ceremony will launch in Tokyo and its US stores in New York and Los Angeles during New York Fashion Week, while hip London designer Henry Holland's eight-piece range for the label is already out.

Competition comes from Lee, which has teamed up with British fashion's Grande Dame Vivienne Westwood (in the news February 9 for saying on the BBC that the public should "stop shopping for six months" to save the environment). The punk-inspired pieces, that premiered in Milan and Hong Kong in January, will be priced from €98 to €210 and go on sale globally this July.

Meanwhile, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have announced the launch of their first jeans range, consisting of three different styles, for March. They will go on sale exclusively at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and Intermix.

Here are some more exciting, new denim lines announced last year for spring:

Hudson Jeans, which made waves last year with its racy advertising campaign starring Mick Jagger's daughter Georgia, has created a higher-end denim line, which will follow the themes of 'minimalist,' 'resurrection,' 'D.I.Y.' and 'subversion,' with silhouettes including skinny, baggy, high-waisted and flare. Prices range from $100 to $450.

Dior Homme jeans, which have gained popularity among women, especially as a result of the 'boyfriend jean' trend, is now available in designated women's styles. Part of the label's Petite Taille line, the range consists of ultraskinny jeans with stretch elements for the perfect fit. The range is on sale at international Dior Homme stores, with jeans costing from $407 to $1,185.

Stefano Gabbana, one half of Italian deisgn duo Dolce & Gabbana, has announced a new denim line via his Twitter account. Details are scarce but the look of the collection seems to feature 'used' and 'destroyed' looks with very visible logo tags on the back pockets.

And finally, Victoria Beckham is relaunching her denim line, after the old range was dropped by retailers. The new styles, named simply Victoria Beckham Denim, focus on cigarette silhouettes and 'jeggings' with the occasional boyfriend jean and denim jacket. Prices start at $235.
