Rihanna's dress for the Met Gala this week may have taken 2 years to make but that didn't stop the internet having its fun with it.

The singer's yellow cape dress was compared to everything from an omelet and pizza to Sesame Street's Big Bird.

Now Guo Pei, the Chinese haute couture designer responsible for the dress has had her say on the social media buzz surrounding it.

At a dinner held in her honour by MAC Cosmetics with whom the designer is collaborating with, Pei told The Cut:

"I think it’s really cute! I’m very happy. This dress is very important — if people find this dress interesting and funny, I think it’s great. Rihanna is wearing this dress for entertainment — not for a fashion show."

Despite the comedy surrounding the design Rihanna is widely credited as one of the only guests at the events to stick to the Met Gala's theme.

Anna Wintour appeared on US TV show Late Night With Seth Meyers on Wednesday and had nothing but praise for the singer:

"I really want to tell you about this dress, because Rihanna is such a star. She surfed the internet looking for this, and this was designed by a famous, famous Chinese designer Guo Pei and apparently took one Chinese person two years to make this dress."

"It's a dress not to forget" she added.
