Style File: The stylish fit kit to exercise this year

Sticking to a new year fitness regime should be a breeze with this sporty gear, says Emma Akbareian

Come the new year, most of us are ready to lay down the champagne flute and gravy-laden fork in favour of something a little more athletic. At least, in theory.

Getting off the sofa is the first step – and for those able to prise themselves away from the tin of Quality Street there’s no better way to get in the mood for exercise (read: procrastinate until 3 January) than by getting the gear sorted.

The first stop on a trip to stock up on exercise gear should be to the well-timed pop-up shop from Princesse Tam Tam in Selfridges. A label traditionally known for its lingerie, Princesse Tam Tam has turned its technical expertise to the world of sport with a fitness collection. The range is made up of functional pieces mixed in with more fashion- led items such as silver lurex shorts and cropped tops. The heat-regulating fabrics used in the collection are a nifty feature which will come in handy when working up a sweat.

The clothing offerings from the leading sportswear brands have come a long way since the days of slithery shell suits and sweatstained trackies, thanks to the help of a few high-fashion friends.

The long standing collaboration between Stella McCartney and Adidas now has a well-established fanbase of those looking for more stylish sportswear. For the new season, McCartney’s designs take on a softer appearance with pastel colours of lemon, turquoise and rose in everything from sweaters and swimwear to waterproof jackets.

If all that isn’t hi-tech enough then the new FuelBand from Nike ought to do the trick. This is the new and improved version of Nike’s wrist device devised to monitor your activity. It allows exercise obsessives to track their daily exercise and set goals. Luckily, sleek design makes it a discreet and wearable accessory to team with any garb, sporty or not.
