Tokyo's fashion fans mourn closure of beloved brand
Sunday 20 June 2010
Just days after announcing a big celebration for its 10th birthday, the quirky and 'kawai' Japanese fashion brand Banana Fish has announced it will be shutting down all operations.
The sudden closure, which affects all physical as well as online stores, has shocked staff and customers alike.
According to the respected Tokyo Fashion blog, Banana Fish has a "cult following among [...] Japanese girls." An editor writes: "The always-cute artwork they create for their clothing features various popular characters who are involved in storylines that customers could follow on the Banana Fish blog," adding that fans are "very committed and engaged. Thus, the sudden end is being taken personally by many of these girls [...]."
An excerpt of an official explanation letter from the brand, translated from Japanese, offers that "the reason [for the sudden closing] is that the manager is now absent, and we cannot continue to do business with that being the case."
A representative called Moco, who wrote the letter, also said that "the suddenness of this announcement honestly shook the staff as well. New releases and events were all lined up [for the anniversary], and we were looking forward to informing you as soon as we could, but now we are unable to and are all very saddened by this."
