Watch: Lady Gaga's acceptance speech at the CFDA Awards
Thursday 09 June 2011
The superstar, who was honored with the Fashion Icon award at Monday's ceremony, admitted that she called Anna Wintour a "bitch" in a text message.
Opening her acceptance speech by saying that she couldn't "believe I'm allowed in here," Gaga - wearing a Mugler gown and changing into a studded thong for her stage appearance - continued on to tell the story of how she was informed that she had won the much-coveted prize: "When I was told I had won this award, [US Vogue editor-in-chief] Anna Wintour sent me a text message...and I actually thought it was Anna Trevelyan, who is one of my close friends and Nicolas's [Nicolas Formichetti, Gaga's stylist] assistant..so my reply was: 'Yes, bitch, we did it!'...I got a reply that said: 'How lovely!'"
But the fashion-forward singer also charmed the audience by expressing heartfelt gratitude to fashion ("What fashion means to me...I always felt like I made it before I had made it because of all of you.") and admitting that she was nervous before coming on stage, but her 19-year-old sister - who studies fashion at Parsons - calmed her down by saying: "Don't be nervous; this is the first time, and if you ever win again, it will never feel as good as it feels right now."
