97 Dutch restaurants recognized for value
Tuesday 23 November 2010
Michelin has completed its review of Dutch restaurants for 2011, but there are other options for budget travelers.
Among the 97 designated "Bib Gourmand" restaurants in the Michelin Guide Netherlands 2011, released today November 23, are 20 new honorees.
Bib Gourmand selections are notable venues which serve three-course meals for less than €35 ($48).
Along with the value distinctions, nine restaurants were awarded their first Michelin star, making the Netherlands home to more than 80 single-starred restaurants, 13 two-starred restaurants and two three-starred restaurants. The guide also features a section featuring reasonably-priced Michelin-starred restaurants where diners can eat for roughly €60 ($81).
The company said that recent Michelin ratings have confirmed "a clearly discernible trend over the past few years: Fine dining has become more affordable," and that because of the recession, "Bib Gourmand" ratings have become "increasingly important to readings in recent years and are much sought after."
If €35 still sounds a bit expensive to you, full-length Let's Go 2010 budget travel guides are available - for free - on the Let's Go Web site. Take a look at a the Let's Go guide to cheap dining in The Netherlands: http://www.letsgo.com/12364-europe-travel-guides-the_netherlands-munchies-c
Can't be bothered? Ditch the guides and try one of Amsterdam's "squat" restaurants. These cooperative kitchens run by volunteers offer a porthole into the city's hip underground. A two-to-three-course meal costs between €5 and €10, and many serve beer and wine. The downside (for some) is that most serve only vegetarian cuisine and menus are pre-set.
According to travel blogs, De Peper, which is located in the former Netherlands Film Academy, and doubles as a creative space, is a local favorite. De Peper is located at Overtoom 301 1054 HW Amsterdam, Tel. +31 020 412 2954, http://www.depeper.org/
