Columbian and Turkish spirits amongst best selling in the world

Industry magazine Drinks International publishes on July 5 the Drinks Millionaires Club. A list of spirits which have achieved sales of over 1 million cases. Including new edition, Columbian spirit Aguardiente Antioqueno.


 

The Drink millionaires club is a list comprising of spirit brands that have achieved actual sales of at least one million standard cases per year. It is the only listing of its kind in the world, and is compiled by industry magazine Drinks International. The 2010 edition, which is based on sales volumes from 2009, has a 162, a record number, of brands on the list. The publication will be available to subscribers of Drinks International from July 5.

In 2009 the most popular brand by terms of units sold was Smirnoff Vodka which is owned by drinks company Diageo, Bacardi Rum owned by the Bacardi Company came second. The 2010 edition features 18 new brands, 9 new companies and two new countries, Turkey and Columbia. The top two brands of 2009 Smirnoff and Bacardi remained unchanged for 2010. Newcomer Turkish spirit Yeni Raki, which is famed for being the national drink and comes served cold, sold 3 million cases. The other new additions to the list Columbian spirits Aguardiente Antioqueno and Medellin rum sold 3.4 million and 1.28 million cases respectively.

Speaking about the trends in the two most popular international brands Smirnoff and Bacardi, a spokesperson for Drinks International said ‘Smirnoff was always likely to be top for the foreseeable future as while Bacardi is declining steadily Smirnoff [sales] climb'.
