CORRECTION: Subway restaurants surpass McDonald's
Monday 28 February 2011
Corrects second paragraph about Subway's origin) Sandwich maker Subway is on its way to paving the fast-food world green and yellow now that it boasts more franchise locations than its nearest rival McDonald's.
The submarine chain, which originated in Connecticut, USA in 1965, has been aggressively setting up shops around the world and now about 34,000 store locations in 96 countries, from Argentina to Zambia.
The Golden Arches, meanwhile, clocks in at around 32,000 locations in 117 countries.
According to Entrepreneur.com, Subway's success can be attributed to a variety of reasons, including a strong marketing strategy that told "a great story."
An advertising campaign in North America following the weight loss progress of a college student, for example, elicited a huge response from viewers. Jared Fogle became the face of the 'Subway diet,' and helped the franchise carve a niche in healthy fast-food. At his peak, Fogle weighed 425 pounds. But in a series of commercials, viewers followed his progress as he lost 245 pounds by eating Subway sandwiches.
Last year, Fogle attracted a few snarky headlines after gaining around 40 pounds. To get back on track, the 33-year-old ran the New York City Marathon last November and clocked in at 5 hours and 13 minutes.
Consumers may be drawn to franchises because they can rely on getting the same food and service anywhere in the world, but many fast-food chains also cater to their marketplace. The McDonald's in India, for example, replaced their signature beefy Big Macs with the Maharaja Mac, made with chicken.
Here's a list of other top fast-food chains with a worldwide presence:
KFC: 20,200 locations worldwide in 109 countries
Starbucks: 17,009 locations in 50 countries
Pizza Hut: 13,100 locations in 97 countries
Burger King: 12,100 locations around the world
Wendy's Group: 6,500 locations, 21 countries
Dunkin' Donuts: 2,600 locations in 30 countries
