AS an indication of the limited availability of Austrian wine in the UK, two-thirds comes from the giant Winzerhaus co-operative. Its basic range includes three reasonably priced whites, a gruner veltliner, welschrielsing, a drier pinot blanc and one red, a blauer zweigelt; all are available at Tesco.

Winzerhaus 1991 Gruner Veltliner, pounds 3.29- pounds 3.50, Sainsbury, Tesco, Gateway:a light aperitif-style white with a touch of sweetness and fresh acidity.

Weinkellerei Burgenland 1990 Neusiedlersee Eiswein 1990, pounds 6.99 (half), Oddbins: rich sweet speciality made from grapes frozen on the vine, luscious and bracingly crisp.

Lenz Moser 1991 Gruner Veltliner, pounds 3.99, Waitrose: a delicate whiff of gruner veltliner pepper and medium-bodied, stylishly dry fruitiness.

Kremser Wachtberg 1990 Traminer Kabinett, Weingut Undhof, pounds 7.95, Harrods; pounds 6.99, Peake Wines, Fareham, Hampshire (0329 822733): aromatic, soft, with traminer fruit spiciness.

Steiner Hund Riesling Kabinett 1990, Weingut Undhof, pounds 8.75, Harrods: delicate aromatic with dry concentrated fruit and intensity of flavour.

Winzerhaus 1991 Blauer Zweigelt, pounds 3.69, Tesco: light-bodied, lively, cherryish fruit with gentle, juicy tannins and dry finish.
