* Veronica's, 3 Hereford Road, London W2 (020 7229 5079). Mon-Fri 12-11.30pm, Sat 6.30-11.30pm. This fascinating neighbourhood restaurant is run by knowledgeable Veronica and delves into the history of British food. It doesn't ram unappetising parts of the past down the throat, just serves it up intelligently. Dishes such as 14th-century pork and golden apples (£14.50), and mumbled eggs and minted peacakes with bitter leaves (£10.50), update ancient and trad recipes, and, as well as the history notes, have symbols to show if they're low fat, high fibre, vegetarian or vegan. Winner of various healthy-menu awards, Veronica's has a set-price menu at £13.50 for two courses, £17.50 for three; à la carte £20-25 without drinks.

* Wagamama, 1A The Printworks, Corporation Street, Manchester (0161-839 5916). Mon-Sat 12-11pm, Sun 12.30-10pm. Not officially open until 23 October, Manchester's is the latest branch of the egalitarian, economical, refectory-style Japanese-ish canteens which first opened in Bloomsbury back in the early Nineties. The menu kicks off with raw juices "to cleanse the body of toxins and provide optimal energy and nourishment for healthier living". Well, it's a start. Then noodle soups, rice dishes, fried noodles, yakitori and dumplings provide nourishing fuel. There's plenty for vegetarians - a good feed for less than a tenner. Green tea is the healthy drink of the moment; at Wagamama, it comes free.
