Five important things to think about before the Freshers arrive...
Many years ago, your Bites correspondent happened to be staying in the same Miami hotel as a certain London-born supermodel. We ended up having lunch together in the (very chi-chi) on-site restaurant. The thing to order, she confided, was the burger and fries from the kids menu – delicious, decidedly big enough, and half the price of the adult version.
But how would smart, sit-down British restaurants feel about grown-ups stealing the kids' menu? I tried Le Café Anglais (020 7221 1415), the elegant brasserie run by Rowley Leigh in London's Queensway. Though not strictly a dish for nippers, the roast chicken leg (£4.50) stood out from the other £13-and-beyond main courses. It was a triumph – plump and juicy, more than enough and a total bargain.
The supremely helpful waiter didn't blink – and there was a magician at Sunday lunchtime too. Go on, get in touch with your inner child and save a few quid into the bargain.
