Take advantage of bargain flights to check out the latest in the dynamic New York restaurant scene.

French-born chef Laurent Tourondel has just been named 'Bon Appétit' magazine's restaurateur of the year, coinciding with the opening of his BLT Market, 1430 Sixth Avenue (001 212 521 6125; bltmarket.com), where seasonal ingredients from farmers' markets are the inspiration.

Gray Kunz is one of the city's most lauded chefs. At Grayz, 13-15 West 54th Street (001 212 262 4600; grayz.net), his "finger food" includes tamarind-glazed chicken with cauliflower and yoghurt.

Marco Canora won acclaim for Hearth in the East Village. Now he's brought his Italian cooking to midtown at Insieme, 777 Seventh Avenue (001 212 582 1310; restaurant insieme.com), with dishes such as black olive oil poached lemon fish.

Soto, 357 Sixth Avenue (001 212 414 3088), is home to third-generation sushi chef Sotohiro Kosugi, whose menu includes sea urchin wrapped in squid with raw quail egg.
