Saturday

2000 Alamos Chardonnay, Bodega Catena Zapata, £5.99 Oddbins, Majestic, Unwins

Covered in glory after winning the chardonnay trophy at this year's International Wine Challenge. Alamos from Catena shows that Argentina has the potential to match Australia for affordable yet complex chardonnay in the tropically ripe and not too oaky spectrum of flavour.

1998 Vinha Padre Pedro, Casa Cadaval, £5.99 Marks & Spencer

With its sweet, almost chocolatey aromas, this unusual Ribatejo blend of the native Portuguese grape varieties of trincadeira and castelão, with pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon, tastes of soft, ripe berry fruits. Though surprisingly youthful, it is now softening into spicy maturity and is ripe for enjoyment.

2001 Lands End Sauvignon Blanc, £5.59 Tesco (normal price £6.99)

South African producers will go to the ends of the earth to find suitably cool spots to grow sauvignon blanc. Witness this ultra-crisp example with its tomato leaf aromas and full-flavoured, steely dry gooseberry fruitiness from the Cape's most southerly vineyards. All South African wines are reduced by 20 per cent at Tesco until tomorrow.

Any day

2001 Terra Vitis Corbières, Mont Tauch, £4.99 Majestic

It's open season now for wild boar in the southern French area of Corbières. This traditional, yet juicy, Mediterranean blend of carignan, syrah and grenache, suffused with the herby scents of the Languedoc garrigue, is as much a match for Toulouse or Cumberland sausage as well as boar.
