Save space while showing off your nicest bottles of vino

A quieter Christmas and New Year may mean that you have rather more wine left over than usual. Firstly, well done on your restraint, and secondly, where are you going to put it all? A nice new wine rack is likely the solution.

Racks are available in a multitude of shapes, sizes, finishes and styles, and one will ensure all of your best bottles are safely stowed until the end of dry January.

From traditional wooden models to space-saving wall racks and gleaming contemporary copper designs, whatever your taste or budget there is a rack ready and waiting to host your rioja.

When buying a wine rack, consider how much booze you generally have to store; a half-empty rack is quite a sorry sight.

Next, decide where you’ll be keeping it – some designs are for your countertop, while most are standalone, others are wall-mounted and a few even double as a side table.

We’ve rounded up the best racks that will organise your bottles neatly. We put sturdiness at the forefront of our requirements – no one wants wayward wine, after all – and it was important that the rack itself looked smart and stylish when displaying your beaujolais.

You can trust our independent reviews. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.

Design Ideas teak wood 6 bottle wine organiser

Teak 6 Bottle Organiser copy.jpg

We like this stylish and classic wall-mounted wine holder. Made from strong, sustainably harvested teak, it’s a well-made wooden rack that’s easily attached to your kitchen wall using the included fixing kit. It will hold up to six bottles of wine – or champagne, spirits or whatever – on the cubby part of the shelf, and six glasses suspended by the stem.

The rack measures 70cm by 16cm and is ideal for creating extra storage without taking up floor or cupboard space. Wooden and wall-mounted racks are often much pricier than this, so this piece is a good find.

Emma Bridgewater black toast wooden wine rack

Emma Bridgewater.jpg

Fans of Emma Bridgewater’s instantly recognisable wares can continue the theme with this solid, freestanding oak wine rack. Featuring beautiful carved lettering in the black toast font to help organise your pinot noirs from your pinot grigios, this rack will hold nine of your favourite bottles.

And, handily, it arrives fully assembled. At 50cm by 35cm it’s surprisingly diminutive and fits well into a small kitchen. You could easily stack another on top or place two side by side for more stylish storage.

Present Time folding honeycomb wine rack

Honeycomb Folding Rack.jpg

If you find that you’re more of an occasional hoarder of booze, observe this ingenious piece of kit: the folding honeycomb wine rack. This smokey grey rack does exactly as it says on the tin – when opened up it stands at 22cm tall and 31cm wide, with six octagonal holes that securely hold six standard or larger wine bottles. When your supply has run dry, the rack folds flat for easy storage. A great idea for those that are spatially challenged, or party drinkers.

Kirkton House copper wine rack

Kirkton House Copper.jpg

This wine rack is one of Aldi’s magical online-only special buys, and is a complete bargain. A modern and stylish freestanding chrome rack in an on-trend copper hue, this will look good whether it’s on the floor or placed on a sideboard or countertop. Though it strictly only holds 12 bottles, we managed to sturdily pack in 15.

The only downside is that some chunkier, premium bottles wouldn’t fit in certain holes, and it’s likely you’ll have to put your champagne in a separate rack. On the upside, there are lots of matching copper kitchenware options available that will spruce up your space for next to nothing, too. Get it before it sells out.

RTA freestanding wood wine rack 9 bottle

RTA.jpg

This is the classic wine rack that has really stood the test of time. Made in the UK since 1979, RTA use FSC and Rainforest Alliance certified timber and British steel in its patented manufacturing process to create sturdy, no-nonsense and super-stylish wine racks in a wide range of sizes and styles. This is the universally appealing nine-bottle rack in a sophisticated dark pine, which holds most standard and large-sized bottles – extra chunky ones are best on the top.

We’re also lusting after the 90-bottle capacity rack – if only we owned enough wine to justify it. Each rack is built to last and extension clips can be purchased to up your existing rack’s capacity as you invest in more wine over the years.

The verdict: Wine racks

We liked all of the racks in this list, but the price, classic styling and versatility of the Design Ideas teak wood six bottle organiser really impressed with its dual bottle- and glass-holding ability.

We also really liked the Emma Bridgewater and Off the Grain racks which are beautiful and make a real statement. While for something fun and modern, Shabby Store’s pretty pink rack ticks the box.
