Chapoutier Petite Ruche Rouge Crozes-Hermitage 2009
From the hillsides of the northern Rhône and one of the most famous names in all wine-making, this red won three top awards at last year's International Wine Challenge. It boasts huge summer fruit aromas and flavours, lots of peppery undertones, a touch of hillside herbs, yet is still fresh on the palate. Best with rosemary-and garlic-spiked roast lamb or a chicken cacciatore. £14.99, Waitrose
La Prendina Estate Corvina Red 2010
Just the bottle to brighten up a grey day, this is a briskly approachable, cherry-flavoured, easy-drinking lightweight red from the Veneto in northern Italy. The Corvina grape gives it a little added texture and grip, making this a perfect bottle for simple supper dishes such as gnocchi with tomato sauce or a risotto. £7.99, Marks & Spencer
Château D'Angles La Clape Classique 2009
Grown on the La Clape headland overlooking the Mediterranean by Eric Fabre, the former wine-maker at Château Lafite Rothschild, and made from a blend of the local Bourboulenc grape with Grenache, Roussanne and Marsanne. Full-bodied, complex, serious wine-making that deserves serious fish and shellfish – and at a bargain price. There is also an excellent red in the same range. £9.99 (until 31 January – normally £11.99), Wine Rack
