Santa Cecilia Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC 2009

Cast aside any belief that Italian whites are wishy-washy with this elegantly voluptuous bottle where the Trebbiano grapes have been given structure and depth from four months of oak ageing. Flavours of peach, honey, apricot and some light spicy notes are the result. An excellent wine for, say, a salt-baked sea bass, but also full-flavoured enough for pork and chicken. £14, chixandbuck.com

Old Vines Grenache Noir 2011

Another full-on treatment of an individual grape, this time from the Côtes du Roussillon area, though here great depth of flavour comes from grapes from old vines, rather than oak, baked in the hot sun of southern France. Rich and ripe, but still retaining plenty of fresh fruit flavour and a good match for any kind of grilled meats, particularly lamb. Beware the 14.5 per cent ABV. £7.99, Marks & Spencer

Porcupine Ridge Syrah Viognier 2011

There are some good deals on South African wines at Majestic at the moment and this is one of the picks. A really robust, fulsome New World red from the Western Cape, where some of the wilder Syrah flavours are tamed by the more subtle Viognier, resulting in floral aromas and flavours of plums, blackberries and pepper.
