Frozen maki roll in a tube
Tuesday 01 June 2010
Meet Sushi Poppers, an innovative frozen sushi roll that is packaged like Nestle's Push-Up frozen treats.
You might ask yourself: why do I need to eat an eight-piece maki roll frozen in a tube? Well, because you can, it's mess- and fuss-free, and it may prove to be a tastier option than the stale chips in the vending machine.
Sushi Poppers are well designed, with every detail thought out for form and function. The stick that helps pop the next piece out of the tube also doubles as your soy sauce dispenser.
The US-based creators of Sushi Popper, Lucas Furst and Evan Kaye, are hoping to expand Sushi Poppers to the freezer section of markets, ballparks, schools, vending machines and even airplanes.
The rolls come in 22 different flavors from raw fish (tuna, salmon) to vegetarian (sweet chili tofu, garden roll), and even more unexpected options like desserts (caramel rice pudding, key lime pie) and meats (beef teriyaki, sesame miso chicken) including with gluten-free and kosher options.
Frozen sushi itself isn't novel. Picard, France's all flash-frozen market, has been selling various frozen sushi packages, including a 12 Sushi Maki combo (€7.90) for years.
A six-pack can be purchased online at SushiPopper.com for $29.95 ($4.99/a roll). You will need to wait one to two hours for your sushi to thaw - it's unclear if the texture and taste will be comparable to supermarket sushi or your favorite fresh sushi bar.
But you can always pretend you are dining on ruibe, a Japanese delicacy winter-frosted salmon cut with an albacore shell.
