Is Rachael Ray two steps away from Julia Child? You decide
Tuesday 24 May 2011
In an attempt to illustrate the 'culinary zeitgeist' of the present, a US think tank has plotted today's major gastronomical players on a colorful subway map meant to provide a snapshot of contemporary food culture.
According to food and beverage consultant the Hartman Group in Washington, the gastronomical world can be divided into nine metro lines: Central, Modern, Global, Local, Elevated Basics, Education, Food Media, Sustainability and Packaged.
Take the Central line, for instance, and your options are to get off at stops like Martha Stewart, James Beard or Mario Batali.
Riders wanting to get to stops like Marcus Samuelsson, Rick Bayless, David Chang, Daniel Boulud and Jean-Georges Vongerichten, meanwhile, would take the yellow Global line.
Reaction to Hartford's interpretation of today's food culture is mixed, with one commentator aghast at the positioning of Rachael Ray who is on the metro's Food Media line and two stops away from Julia Child.
"Julia is turning in her grave," wrote LDGourmet. "She's two stops from Rachael, open a box of broth and call it dinner, Ray? And Ruth Reichl is another two stops from Rachael? Gosh you guys must love you some 30 minute meals."
The map, which comes in an 18"x 24" (46 cm x 61 cm) format is a limited-edition poster that can be pre-ordered for $25 and ships in four to six weeks.
