Mexican brewery comes out with gay beer
Thursday 24 February 2011
If you're gay or lesbian, this beer's for you. A small brewery in Mexico has launched a line of beers marketed specifically for the gay and lesbian beer drinker.
Already available in bars in Mexico City and beach resort towns like Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos, the Salamandra and Purple Hand beers will be exported to Colombia and Japan in the coming months, reports Mexican wire agency Efe.
The beers, distributed by Bodega 12 in Mexico, are named after gay civil rights movements from the 1960s. During a demonstration to protest the editorial policies of a local newspaper in San Francisco in 1969, employees dumped purple printer ink onto the crowds below who then left purple handprints all over the city.
The labels have been designed to be peeled off and worn as badges of gay pride.
The honey ale, malt-based beer contains organic honey and has already drawn interest from the US and countries in South America.
Filling a niche market and capitalizing on famous personalities and trends has become a popular marketing tool among artisan micro-breweries in the Guadalajara area.
Another group of Mexican businessmen who describe themselves as "fanatic" soccer fans, came up with La Liga Cervecera or the Beer League, a series of commemorative beers honoring legendary soccer heroes. The 10 Maradó, for instance, is named after Argentina's Diego Maradona and his team number.
