The nation’s favourite pizza has been revealed… and it probably won’t surprise you which one's nabbed the top spot.

To celebrate National Pizza Day tomorrow, research has been conducted to discover the most preferred pizzas in the country.

With so many different style of pizzas to choose from, it was a close call which toppings would make the top 10 list.

In tenth place came the Veneziana, which comes with toppings of pine kernels, red onion, baby capers, black olives, sultanas, mozzarella and tomato.

Right at the other end of the list in the coveted number one spot is the classic Margherita, because no other pizza could possibly satisfy Brits in the same way as the perfect combination of mozzarella and tomato.

The American pepperoni pizza came in second, with the La Reine - which consists of prosciutto cotto, black olives, closed cup mushroom, mozzarella and tomato - taking third place.

The research was carried out by Pizza Express across their 490 restaurants during autumn last year.

With National Pizza Day on the horizon, a variety of pizza restaurants are taking full advantage of the national celebration by showering their customers with special deals.

Prezzo, Strada and Vapiano are offering 30 per cent off their pizzas all day, while Pizza Express are giving their consumers the opportunity to pay £9.95 for two courses or £12.95 for three courses.

National Pizza Day, which is taking place for the very first time in the UK, was coined by Foodism as a way of putting a spotlight on the much-loved Italian dish.
