New Foursquare 3.0 rewards diners who travel in packs
Friday 11 March 2011
Foursquare has launched a new souped-up version of its platform that gives incentives to users who travel in groups.
Their new 3.0 version rewards users who bring friends into different establishments. Check in to select US locations of natural foods grocer Whole Foods with a friend, for example, and users will be rewarded with a free cookie.
US restaurant chain Chili's is also offering a free appetizer to users who check in with three friends.
Likewise, the Swarm Special offers incentives to members who travel in groups. Applebee's restaurants across the US will give away free mozzarella sticks to everyone in the group if five people check in after 9 PM.
First-time check-ins will also be rewarded at Arby's, where 'Newbies' will get $1 off the new Angus Three Cheese & Bacon at participating locations across the US.
As of February 2011, Foursquare had over 6.5 million users worldwide and a database of 25 million merchants in their system.
According to AppAppeal, which reviews web applications and tracks traffic data, most of the Foursquare users come from the US at 30 percent, followed by Japan at 6.5 per cent, and Indonesia at 4.8 percent. All figures are from March 10.
In December of last year, rival Gowalla updated their service to support checking in on Facebook Places, Foursquare, Twitter and Tumblr. They also added special points of interest like Walt Disney World, major sports stadiums and famous international landmarks.
