Not a recipe, but suggestions for pleasing babies and adults. Roots like parsnip, carrot or sweet potato are perfect for puréeing and eating from the earliest age. It's a great way to get babies used to new flavours, and you can freeze little pots or ice cube trays of the tasty mush for future meals. Unlike jars of baby food these purées actually taste of what they are. Boil or roast carrots and swede to mash and eat yourself with braised beef. Season what the adults are going to eat, but keep the babies' puréed portions salt-free.

Some purée suggestions for babies (aged four months-plus) and for grown-ups, for that matter:

¿ Parsnip and apple
¿ Carrot and caraway
¿ Sweet potato and plantain
¿ Swede and parsnip
¿ Celeriac and apple
