It's all about the steak: there are three in all (fillet, sirloin and rump) in four sizes (6, 8, 12 and 20oz), all served with chips, béarnaise, ketchup and mustard. The all-Angus beef comes from a butcher in the north of Scotland, and is aged for two weeks. If you want something other than steak, you'll have to wait until pudding.

Fish! 61-63 Brighton Road, Surbiton, Surrey, reservations tel: 0845 100 4555

So successful is the Fish! formula of fresh fish, simple cooking, smart design and family-friendly atmosphere, that there are now 18 of them throughout Britain. First choose your fish (swordfish, cod, skate etc), then your cooking technique (steam, grill etc), then your sauce (hollandaise, herb butter etc). That's two too many decisions to make, but at least you know you'll be having fish.

Soupworks 56 Goodge Street, London W1, tel: 020 7637 7687

The classic 1994 Seinfeld "Soup Nazi" episode triggered off a tidal wave of soup kitchens across the Western world. Soupworks started in 1998 and now runs three outlets in London where you can eat in or take out. There are salads, noodles and sushi, but don't be silly – have the minestrone or leek and potato soup.
